Something Lost, Something Found . . .
DISSOLVE TO: FROM TITLES
INT. OFFICE - DAY
A man sits at his desk in his third floor office in the
Nickels Arcade, this is BRAND MICHAELS. His windows are
above this dark tiled atrium, its lined with everything from
cigars shops to mens shoes, travel agents to Central American
imports. Brands' other window faces State St. Ann Arbor's
road lined with the splendor of the University of Michigan.
State St. is lively day and night.
Brand grabs a paper at the front of his desk facing the
camera with the headline "Something Lost, Something Found".
Tilt and rack til Brand is in focus.
1 I/E MONGOLIAN BBQ - AFTERNOON 1
A woman KAMERATH walks hurriedly through the door, her title
card rolls as she is coming through the doors. Kamerath
heads to area to check in for work.
She returns to the podium in time to help a handsome young
man as he walks into Mongolian BBQ. He approaches the
hostess stand, this is GUY BAESTARD. His title card rolls as
he enters the restaurant.
KAMERATH
One for lunch?
GUY BAESTARD
Make that three, I am expecting two
more.
After he is seated GUY goes to the salad bar. He after
getting a salad returns to his seat to drop it off, then goes
back to the hostess stand
KAMERATH
Can I help you?
GUY BAESTARD
I need a telephone book.
KAMERATH
What are you looking for?
GUY BAESTARD
I have lost track of a few items in
town and was hoping to gets some
help finding them.
KAMERATH
(reaching under the podium
she pulls out a stack of
business cards and
handing him one)
Here I think BRAND can help you.
Guy examines the card and head towards back to his table.
Kamerath walks over to the bar to assist the bartender.
1A EXT. MONGOLIAN BBQ - DAY 1A
A beautiful woman in a long stylish coat is walking down the
sidewalk towards Mongolian BBQ, she is talking on a
cellphone. This is MORGAEN LA THAMES, her title card rolls
as she is walking by the windows of Mongolian BBQ.
MORGAEN
(close up)
I know your stuff was stolen...
You'll get it back, it just "stuff"
anyway... And maybe if you stop
throwing yourself at handsome
slightly shady men" you have a lot
less problems like this. Of course
he broke into Internet 2 using your
computer Sam. Your business is on
North Campus and you let him use it
all the time.
(looking at her wrist)
Stop crying about your stuff, I
know Mom gave it to you.
(long shot)
I know we have been friends for 15
years, and that Mom gave me one
too...
(looking around)
Listen this is Morgaen talking I'll
figure something out you'll get
your stuff back, but I have to meet
someone.
(heading into Mongolian)
In walks Morgaen she stands at the podium for a moment she
sees that no one appears to be coming. As she is looking for
someone, she sees him and walks over. He kisses her and
says. . .
GUY BAESTARD
Aye! Babame. I CONceptUALIZED AN EVent,
which I also produced, named the Saucy
Vibrations Concert.
This event was designed as a day of
music, with a community forum hosted by
FIRST. FIRST is A NATIOnal organization
dedicated to the socIAL AND
POLItical activism of 18-35
year olds. I believe that people don?t riot when they feel
they have a social and political voice, which was the case in
1967, and in a vastly different ways was the case in 1998. I
wanted to create a ?face? in a neutral setting for
differenrinking with, and for how long. He heads for a table
next to the windows facing Main St. where he passes Kamerath,
she hands him some business card and smiles.
BRAND MICHALES
Thanks.
KAMERATH
I'll be over in a moment.
Brand grabs a table and starts going through the cards, he
also has a pile of mail sitting on the table. The cards are
largely attorneys, CPA's, and realty companies.
The two musicians on stage seem to be putting up their
equipment.
Brand starts to open the mail on n tore through East Lansing.
The relationship that I established with FIRST lead to me
being their Director of Media and Marketing for the We the
Future 2000 Presidential Convention which brought caNDIDATES
IN CONtact with young people and their
concerns. I arranged for the participation of some of our
key sponsors for this event. Their roles included:
conducting interviews, advertising of the event, and being
convention panelist. Some of these groups were: Link
Magazine, the Fox News Network, The Colleit between his
fingers weeping. ANANDA ROBERTS is Brands heart and soul,
she also the managing partner of Brand Firm Enterprises.
BRAND MICHALES
Hey, are you guys gonna' ta play
something?
ERIC
We're on break.
BRAND MICHALES
Its not even noon yet.
JEREMY
That isn't stopping you from eating
lunch.
ERIC
Yeah.
JEREMY
Do you know how to work a guitar?
BRAND MICHALES
I know my way around.
ERIC
Then why don't you play something?
Brand nods while considering this, he notices a distinct
smirk on Jeremy's face and gets up and heads to the stage.
Plucking a few of the strings while listening to the body of
the guitar Brands seems to be content with the guitar's
tuning. He then leads off into Something Lost, Something
Found. After listing for awhile Jeremy and Eric join in.
BRAND MICHALES
You guys are damn good.
ERIC
(shaking Brands hand)
You know your way around a fret
board yourself.
BRAND MICHALES
If I could pay the bills giggin'
I'd live on the road workin' a
stage at night. And playin'
"recovery" during the day.
JEREMY
(lifting his sunglasses)
That's what sunglasses are for.
Brand walks over to his table where Kamerath has brought him
a Jones Soda.
BRAND MICHALES
Thanks.
KAMERATH
(smiling)
When do I get to work a case?
BRAND MICHALES
When you learn to work a camera.
KAMERATH
Where is my camera? I've been
getting you a lot of cards.
You said
(imitating Brand)
"When you can sell this business,
then I'll know that you love this
business. . . "
(in her own voice)
Well it's been plenty long enough.
I want to work a real case.
BRAND MICHALES
(not meaning to bring up
the camera)
Ahhhh, I'll get you that camera
soon. Adventure does not mean
jumping out of a plane without a
parachute. How's your kickboxing?
KAMERATH
(as she is leaving, with a
smile)
You keep slacking on my camera and
you'll find out.
BRAND MICHALES
(calling after her)
I'll bring it later.
(resting his hand on the
Weekend Etc.)
We zoom in on the "Something Lost, Something Found" article
in Weekend Etc.
CUT TO:BLACK
We then reverse the tone to a black background with white
text and roll credits. We pull out of the credits and into
Brands office.
As the credits roll we hear these voice overs.
MORGAEN (V.O.)
Hello this is Morgaen La Thames. I am
calling for Brand Michaels. When will he
be in? I Have a job for him, need
something found. We know who it is.
Would you have him meet me at Cafe Zola
around noon to 12:30pm? He'll know who I
am, I'll be wearing olive and leather.
Would you tell him to meet me in the
window? Thanks.
Brand's cellphone rings while he is still at Mongolian BBQ,
its Ananda.
ANANDA ROBERTS (V.O.)
Brand.
BRAND MICHALES
Yeah.
ANANDA ROBERTS
I've got a client for you. She wants to
meet you at Cafe Zola around noon.
BRAND MICHALES
What kind of case?
ANANDA ROBERTS
Sounds like larceny.
BRAND MICHALES
(looking at his watch)
I'll be there at noon. How am I going to
spot her? Olive and leather. . . My kind
of lady.
INT. CAFE ZOLA - AFTERNOON
On a table we see a newspaper with the title "U of M's
Internet Two Facility Hacked, Consequences Yet to be
Determined. . . "
The photo in the story has two dark haired strikingly
beautiful women in dresses that might go unnoticed at Neimann
Marcus, but seem misplaced on the campus of the University of
Michigan.
Brand takes a seat at the window and fingers through the
paper. Brand pays only passing attention to the Weekend Etc.
then continues to look down Washington Ave. towards Ashely
St.
Across the street a man hugs and kisses a woman.
EXT. ALLEY MONGOLIAN OFF OF WASHINGTON AVE. - AFTERNOON
MORGAEN
Samsera doesn't know anything.
GUY BAESTARD
Good. She not going to, and neither is
Aleksi, Marin, Ron or that sucker in Cafe
Zola.
MORGAEN
But we have to get her bracelet back, her
Mother gave them to us.
GUY BAESTARD
We'll get it back, just the way we
planned it.
(He reaches in his jacket and
pulls out a manila envelope)
Here take this envelope to the chump
across the street.
MORGAEN
Ok.
GUY BAESTARD
I have to get back to Mongolian Aleski
and Marin will be there any minute now.
They kiss and Guy heads back to Mongolian as Morgaen crosses
Washington. From the Cafe Zola we see them part.
EXT. MAIN ST. AND WASHINGTON - AFTERNOON
As Guy is strolling up the street lost in his own thought.
One of the two women from the Weekend Etc. article on the
Internet Two break-in is walking across Washington Ave.
carrying a black briefcase. MARIN sees his parting with
Morgaen.
MARIN
What hell is he doing with her?
Marin rushes into Mongolian before Guy can see her.
INT CAFE ZOLA - AFTERNOON
Brand looks up from his coffee cup to notice a woman walking
past the window in olive and leather that could make ice
cubes sweat. Brand stands.
MORGAEN
Hello, I'm Morgaen La Thames.
BRAND MICHALES
Brand Michaels. How can I help you?
MORGAEN
A friend of mine has lost some stuff, and
she'd like you to get it back for us.
BRAND MICHALES
What kind of stuff was taken?
Morgaen sliding the large manila envelope that Guy gave her
across the table.
Which Brand takes and dumps out it contents on the table: a
business envelope with $10,000 in it, some photos, and an the
Weekend Etc. article on the North Campus break in.
MORGAEN
You'll get the other half when you find
them.
BRAND MICHALES
Who's your friend?
MORGAEN
Hummm. . . ?
BRAND MICHALES
Who's your friend that you're helping?
MORGAEN
Samsera Deliad. She owns a business on
North Campus.
BRAND MICHALES
I'll need to talk to her also?
MORGAEN
Oh, you'll meet her. I think you are
just the catnip she's been looking for.
(pointing at the articles)
This is all the information that we have.
Here is Samsera's business card she'll be
in touch, and let us know when you've
found something.
BRAND MICHALES
(looking light-headed)
Yeah, yeah, I'll be in touch . . .
MORGAEN
(touching Brands hand)
Are you alright?
BRAND MICHALES
I need to eat, I am hypoglycemic.
(Brand gets up and heads for
the counter)
Morgaen puts a CD, and a business card on the table, and
picks up the cash as Brand is leaving for the counter.
We zoom in on the business card.
2 INT. OFFICE (IN COLOR) -AFTERNOON 2
On the desk we see a newspaper with the title "U of M's
Internet Two Facility Hacked, Consequences Yet to be
Determined...."
The photo in the story has two strikingly beautiful dark
haired women in dresses that might go unnoticed at Neimann
Marcus, but seems quite misplaced on the University of
Michigan's North Campus. Brand pays only passing attention to
the paper and continues to type after glancing at it.
Off screen a knock is heard (at the door). We also hear a
match being lit, and then see a puff of smoke in silhouette,
as a dangerous laugh emanates from the other side of the
door.
The PI looks up to see the silhouette of a woman that could
make ice cubes sweat.
BRAND MICHALES
Come in.
The knob turns and the door slowly opens to reveal a lady
that would be better called "devastating" than truly
feminine. She looks at the PI and then around the office and
takes a drag off of her cigarette.
She lays a business card on his desk with the name Samsera
Delaid on it. Brand picks it up and looks at the name gives
her a look of ambivalence.
SAMSERA DELAID
Do you know who I am?
BRAND MICHALES
Yeah, I know who you are. I could
recognize you from the other side of the
door.
SAMSERA DELAID
Really!?
BRAND MICHALES
Yeah.
SAMSERA DELAID
(tilting her head to show that
she is waiting for an answer)
Well?
BRAND MICHALES
Your the dame with some suckers heart
under your heel, the straw that broke a
good guys back.
SAMSERA DELAID
What are you getting at?
BRAND MICHALES
Woman, by first glance and all other
indicators you're bad news. Bad news
looking to kick some guy into the dirt.
I'm not lookin' to be put on the front
page of some news rag. Your what my Dad
call'd a "coronary in a pair of
stilettos", what else do I need to know?
SAMSERA DELAID
(with a wink and a smile)
I haven't sent anyone to the hospital in
weeks.
BRAND MICHALES
Well that good to know. Why don't you
kick rocks sister. I've already had the
heart attack you're offerin', and I'm not
looking for another.
SAMSERA DELAID
(she slides an envelope across
the table that has 5k written
on the bottom side)
Maybe you're looking for this.
Samseras tosses the cash from Brand's meeting with Morgaen on
his desk.
BRAND MICHALES
(flipping through the cash on
his desk he shakes his head
and smiles)
Yeah... You can count on it.
Samsera slides another set of photos across the table. Brand
takes them.
SAMSERA DELAID
(she is holding an identical
envelope in her hand)
I'll give you the rest of the deal when
get my Bond.
(this pointing at the pictures)
BRAND MICHALES
Bond?
SAMSERA DELAID
Yeah, Bond, its a very particular
bracelet.
Brand looks at the pictures, and news articles. They seem to
be talking about a heist near Ann Arbor pulled off by four
thieves', and how the get-away car was found broken down on
14 headed south.
BRAND MICHALES
What is this about?
(holding up the articles)
SAMSERA DELAID
They're here in town... and
they have my Bond. And I want
it back.
Under the papers is a business card from School Kids Records
and a CD with a Pink Pig in a circular logo.
Brand turns to his computer to log out, and before he is done
she has walked out of his office silently.
BRAND MICHALES
(calling to another room)
Ananda.
This call is to Ananda Roberts.
ANANDA ROBERTS
(She enters the room. And looks
at Brand sitting in front of a
stack of cash.)
What?
BRAND MICHALES
(more loudly)
Ananda!
ANANDA ROBERTS
What!
BRAND MICHALES
See if...
(looking at the business card)
Samsera is out in there.
ANANDA ROBERTS
(smiling)
You are the only person out here.
Are you hearing those voices again?
(looking off into space and
pointing)
I told you to leave Brand alone. He
dropped his last hit at HORDE Festival,
so save your flashbacks, his psychiatrist
knows he is completely sane.
(smiling)
BRAND MICHALES
(almost to himself)
She came in here . . . Damn! That's the
second time today. I wanted to find out
what the deal is with this CD, and this
business card.
ANANDA ROBERTS
Are you sure your blood sugar isn't
acting up?
By most accounts Ananda is the director of the Firm, and
Brand is something more like the talent. While keeping the
company solvent and on track Ananda is the first voice that
clients, cops, and irate citizens hear. Her voice is also
the one they come to love, despite Brand's less than stellar
community standing, more often than not.
Ananda is a gem in a rusty pail, a pearl in an office that is
much more like a burlap sack than an oyster's shell.
In terms of looks Ananda has an uncommon beauty, the kind
that some women hate while others question their sexuality.
Ananda is by all eyes grace in motion, there has been no
shortage of suitors willing to tell her so.
ANANDA ROBERTS (CONT'D)
Ask who what?
BRAND MICHALES
Samsera. About these articles.
ANANDA ROBERTS
(walking over to the desk)
Who's that?
BRAND MICHALES
(He hands her the articles and
nods towards the cash)
"She" is our newest client.
ANANDA ROBERTS
(looking through the cash and
papers on the desk)
Morgaen is our newest client.
BRAND MICHALES
She's Morgaen's friend who has lost her
"Bond". What do you make out of these
articles, she said they have her stuff.
ANANDA ROBERTS
Her "bond"?
BRAND MICHALES
Yeah, her "Bond"
(in a voice of a woman)
"Its a very particular bracelet".
Ananda takes the paperwork, looks through it, and places it
in a file folder. Brand pushes the CD and business card
across the desk to her. Ananda picks up the CD and points to
the address on the card. Brand nods and walks out the door.
CUT TO:
3 I/E. SCHOOL KIDS RECORDS - AFTERNOON 3
Brand is enters Bivouac as a woman in her early twenty's
folds cloths, this is NICOLETTE. He looks at the business
card for Schoolkids Records and says. . .
BRAND MICHALES
Where can I find this CD?
NICOLETTE
All our CDs are downstairs. I can help
though, I work both places.
(pointing towards the center of
the store)
BRAND MICHALES
Downstairs?
NICOLETTE
Yep.
Nicolette heads downstairs, and Brand follows her.
When he gets downstairs he heads towards a poster on the wall
that has the Blind Pig logo, he starts looking through the
records. Nicolette walks over to his side; Brand hands her
his CD. Nicolette nods and he says...
BRAND MICHALES
(walking over the CD rack)
Anything unusual about this CD?
NICOLETTE
(getting a little closer)
Well it is a very unique CD. A guy came
in town looking to order one last week...
(stealing a look at Brand she
smiles)
Do you listen to the Blues?
BRAND MICHALES
(looking at Nicolette and
smiling)
Not as much as I should, I feel like I
could write a song or two.
Unnoticed by Brand and Nicolette Marin stands by a CD rack,
she seems to be waiting for someone. Marin looks up and
notices Brand and the CD he is asking about. She seems
surprised.
NICOLETTE
I bet you could. Have you ever been in a
band?
BRAND MICHALES
Well I don't really count that reform
school gig since the judge set it up.
But I've been known to sit-in with bands
on occassion.
NICOLETTE
You drink Jack don't you?
BRAND MICHALES
When they're out of Maker's Mark, how'd
you guess?
(holding the CD e looks at
Nicolette)
Do you have a list of specially order
items?
NICOLETTE
(smiling)
Yeah, I bet that guy is still on it.
Walking over to the counter Nicolette pulls out a list called
the "special orders list"...
NICOLETTE (CONT'D)
(pointing at a name Guy
Baestard)
You see? That's his name, the guy from
last week, he was here earlier but those
order haven't arrived yet.
BRAND MICHALES
When's he coming back?
NICOLETTE
He said he was goin' out to the Bird of
Paradise. One of the bands on the Blind
Pig label is playing there.
BRAND MICHALES
Do you see the name of the second guy?
NICOLETTE
I wrote his name down on a piece on an
order form. He mentioned some DJs in
town. But. . . his name is Ron something
(looking through some papers
the phone rings)
Hello. . . can you hold?
Brand mills around while she in on the phone.
NICOLETTE (CONT'D)
I have to get back to work.
BRAND MICHALES
Where's that Jazz Club?
Nicolette hands Brand a flyer for the Firefly Club.
NICOLETTE
On Ashley. Check The Club Underground for
the other guy.
BRAND MICHALES
Thanks.
(handing her a card)
Would you call me if you find his name?
NICOLETTE
Sure. At least you'll get some good
music even if you don't find the guy. . .
If you have any more questions before I
call, ring me . . . at home.
(handing Brand a card with her
number on the back, she checks
him out as he walks away)
Brand heads off toward the Firefly Club. On his way there he
looks at the State Theater and heads west.
